Chess Pieces

A game of chess is absolutely nothing without the chess pieces themselves. We can wholeheartedly say a game of chess is enjoyed by a varied number of audiences. Although this game of chess dates back over a couple of hundred years ago. We stock a range of different chess pieces and although we are new to the frame of chess pieces, our team is continually looking at the opportunity to add new and more chessmen of different sizes and styles. We have collectively gone out to search for the best and highest quality chessmen. Our Chessmen are brought in by our team from a range of different countries, however for the traditional staunton chessmen, these are brought in primarily from Amritsar India. Amritsar is the central hub and epicentre of quality hand carved staunton chess pieces, artisans who are highly skilled with their craft use blocks of solid sheesham, boxwood, rosewood, ebony wood and bud rosewood to carve each and every small detail on these chessmen.

Staunton Chess Pieces

Staunton chessmen are the most common term used to phrase weighted staunton chess pieces that were initially introduced by an Englishman Howard Staunton. Staunton was a chess master regarded as one of the greats of his time between 1843 and 1851. Towards the later years of his chess career, Staunton started to write under the chess column focusing on board play. Together with Nathaniel Cooke, Staunton realised at the time a range of different chessmen were available and these chessmen were made of varied size, weight and designs. He also noticed that whilst playing these chessmen were significantly unstable and brittle. Therefore Staunton and Cooke together introduced the Original Staunton chess pieces which were durable, well weighted and long lasting. These staunton chess pieces are now crafted in a range of different designs, most of which are staunton chess pieces but of different designs and now commonly named after chess masters who made their fame during their career.

Other Chessmen

Although we understand the staunton chessmen are heavily popular with our chess sets and chess pieces, we also stock a range of different chess pieces, this including metal roman chessmen in a range of different sizes. We at Chessgammon are always open to suggestions based on the requirements of our customers and we are always able to source a range of different products.

Chess Pieces by Size

We stock a vast range of chess pieces available to you as the customer. Commonly most chess pieces are famous in the 3.75 to 4 inch range, this is simply because this particular size meets the exact specifications of a world tournament chess championship. Championship Chess tournaments involve a 20 Inch board with 3.75 inch chess pieces. A range of ornate designs may be involved in a slightly larger size of 4 inch to 4.25 inch and therefore tend to be hard to source and manufacture. At Chessgammon we stock pieces as small as 2.75 inch ranging to 4 inch currently, however this should change as we are in the process of introducing a larger luxury range of chess pieces that will be available with a storage box. A key measurement that we can tend to forget is also the base of each piece. The chess piece should encompass more than 80% of each board, giving some room between itself and other neighbouring pieces. This is indeed a measurement that can vary based on the type of ornate pieces you may have due to the varied number of sizes with these pieces. On the other hand we shouldn’t have pieces that are too small for the board as this may give the appearance of the board almost looking empty.
